FREE COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING

Accessible Culture is a Human Right

Free live music. Photography club. Writers workshops. Fiber arts gatherings. All free or radically affordable. We've hosted 700+ events since 2021 with 95% free to the public—supporting artists and community-led programming.

Our Track Record

Since September 2021, we've proven that free community programming can coexist with supporting artists. Some programs pay performers. Some are volunteer-driven community clubs. All build culture.

Performing Artists Paid

Three Non-Negotiable Principles

  • Accessible to All: 95% of programming remains free to the public—economic status never determines who can participate in culture
  • Performing Artists Get Paid: Musicians, visual artists, and performers receive fair wage—we never ask artists to work for "exposure"
  • Community Decides: Members vote on programming priorities through democratic governance—not top-down decision-making

The ZU Philosophy

How We Make It Work

The Previously used Mixed Revenue Model

We don't rely on ticket sales to pay artists. Instead, we used a diversified revenue model:

  • Wine bar sales (modest markup funds programming)
  • Wine club memberships (recurring revenue)
  • Photography studio rentals
  • Private event rentals
  • Workshops and paid classes (20-25% of events)
  • Community donations and memberships

This model separates artist compensation from audience attendance. Artists get paid whether 5 people show up or 50.

Why This Needs Nonprofit Support

The for-profit model works, but it's fragile. One slow month affects programming. Rent increases threaten accessibility. Commercial pressure conflicts with community mission.

ZU Arts Initiative creates sustainability by:

  • Separating mission programming from commercial pressure
  • Accessing grant funding for cultural programming
  • Building endowment for long-term stability
  • Removing fear of "not enough ticket sales"
  • Expanding what's possible (more events, better pay)

Community Governance

Members don't just attend events—they shape them. Through democratic voting, the community decides:

  • Which types of programming to prioritize
  • Annual budget allocation
  • Board member elections
  • Major organizational decisions

This isn't "customer feedback." This is collective ownership of cultural infrastructure.

Keep Culture Free
& Artists Paid

This programming only exists because the community makes it possible. Your support ensures we can keep offering 95% free events while paying artists fair wages.
