ABOUT US

The Cultural Commons of Montezuma County

We're building sustainable cultural infrastructure where artists earn living wages, community members access free programming, and Montezuma County thrives as a creative destination.

Our Mission

ZU Arts Initiative builds sustainable cultural infrastructure in Montezuma County by:

→ Providing free and radically affordable community programming

→ Ensuring fair compensation for all artists

→ Keeping creative dollars circulating locally

→ Centering radical inclusivity and community ownership

→ Supporting artists from marginalized communities

Culture Isn't a Luxury—It's Infrastructure. It's What Makes Us Human.

Our Vision

Cultural thriving in rural Southwest Colorado where:

  • Artists earn living wages
  • Community members have free access to professional-quality programming
  • Young people see creative careers as viable paths
  • Montezuma County is known as a cultural destination
  • The model inspires similar work in rural communities nationwide
"We're Not Building a Gallery. We're Building Cultural Infrastructure."

Core Values

These aren't aspirations. They're non-negotiable principles that guide every decision we make.

01

Radical Inclusivity

Economic status never determines who can participate in culture. 95% of our programming is free to the public. No one is turned away for inability to pay.

02

Fair Compensation

Artists are workers who deserve fair wages. We never ask artists to work for "exposure."

03

Community First

Democratic governance. Transparent operations. Shareholders vote on major decisions. One share = one vote, whether you pay $120 or volunteer 144 hours.

04

Local Investment

Keep creative dollars in Montezuma County. Every $200 paid to a local musician circulates through our grocery stores, gas stations, and small businesses.

05

Collaboration

Build bridges, not silos. Partner with local businesses, schools, nonprofits, and cultural organizations. Rising tide lifts all boats.

06

Excellence

High-quality programming matters. Free doesn't mean cheap. Community members deserve professional-quality art and music.

How We Got Here

700+ Events Since 2021

ZU Gallery has hosted over 700 events since opening in September 2021. Listening Rooms. Art exhibitions. Live music. Photography workshops. Writers circles. Tribute concerts. All built on radical inclusivity and fair artist compensation.

We've proven the model works. Now we're building the infrastructure to sustain and expand it.

The Nonprofit Solution

ZU Arts Initiative separates cultural mission from commercial pressure. By accessing grant funding and building community support, we ensure free programming and artist compensation can continue—and expand—beyond any individual's ability to personally fund it.

This isn't about growing for growth's sake. It's about sustainability. It's about proving that rural communities can support vibrant cultural ecosystems where artists thrive and everyone belongs.

Geographic Scope

We're rooted in Montezuma County with the potential to expand to Southwest Colorado as capacity allows. Our focus remains local—serving the Four Corners region with programming that reflects our community's diversity and values.
