INDIVIDUAL ARTIST GRANTS

No Strings Attached

$500-$2,000 grants for artists to make work, take risks, buy equipment, or just survive. Simple application. Artist-led review. We're expanding access to artists who've faced systematic barriers to funding.

Why This Exists

Most arts grants require elaborate proposals, matching funds, and detailed outcomes. We fund artists to just make work—or survive so they can keep making work.

Why This Exists

Innovation Requires Permission to Fail

Most arts grants require elaborate proposals, matching funds, and detailed outcomes. We fund artists to just make work—or survive so they can keep making work.

This is trust-based funding. Simple application. Artist-led review. Minimal reporting. We believe artists when they say what they need.

How We Review Applications

A 3-person artist-led committee reviews all applications quarterly:

  • 2 working artists (elected by artist community)
  • 1 ZAI board member

Artists hold the majority, always.

Applications evaluated based on:

  • Artist's need and how grant would help
  • Impact on artist's practice or survival
  • Contribution to regional cultural ecosystem
  • Creative risk or innovation in the work

Our Commitment to Expanding Access

We're committed to reparative practices in arts funding. Artists from communities that have been systematically excluded from funding opportunities receive additional consideration and support.

All artists can apply. All strong applications are considered. We're expanding who gets access, not limiting it.

A Reparations Approach to Arts Funding

The reality: Artists from marginalized communities have been systematically excluded from funding, recognition, and opportunities for decades. National data shows BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) artists receive only 4% of total arts funding despite making up 40% of the U.S. population. LGBTQ+ artists and disabled artists face similar disparities.

We're not just acknowledging this—we're actively working to correct it.

Artists who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, or from other marginalized communities receive:

  • Additional consideration during grant review
  • Priority consideration for event and exhibition booking
  • Additional mentorship and networking support

Why? Because "best art" and "merit" have historically been determined by gatekeepers who shared the same background—which is why certain voices have been amplified while others have been excluded. We're being intentional about reaching artists who haven't had access.

Does this mean non-marginalized artists can't get grants? No. All artists can apply and receive funding. We're creating NEW opportunities that didn't exist before. We're expanding the pool of funded artists, not limiting it. Quality still matters—we fund strong work. We're just making sure excellent artists from underrepresented communities get the same consideration that others have historically received by default.

This is what equity looks like in practice. We don't just say diversity matters—we put the effort behind it.

What You Can Use It For

We fund three types of needs. All are equally valid.

$500-1K

Survival Grants

Sometimes you just need to survive. These grants help artists cover basic needs so they can keep making work.

  • Rent or mortgage payment
  • Utilities during slow season
  • Medical bills
  • Car repair to get to gigs
  • Groceries during project work

No judgment. Just support.

$1-1.5K

Equipment Grants

Better tools make better work. These grants help artists upgrade or replace essential equipment.

  • Musical instruments or repairs
  • Camera equipment
  • Art supplies
  • Computer or software
  • Sound equipment

Invest in your craft.

$1.5-2K

Project Grants

Make the work you've been dreaming about. These grants fund new creative projects or artistic risks.

  • Recording an album
  • Creating a new body of work
  • Publishing a book or zine
  • Experimental performance
  • Public art installation

Take the creative risk.

How to Apply

Simple Application Process

We keep it simple because artists don't need more bureaucracy in their lives.

  • Basic contact information
  • Brief description of what you do (artist statement, 200 words)
  • What you need funding for (200-300 words)
  • How much you're requesting ($500-$2,000)
  • Optional: Portfolio samples (images, links, etc.)

That's it. No elaborate proposals. No matching funds required. No complicated outcomes reporting.

Review Process

Applications reviewed quarterly by a 3-person artist-led committee:

  • 2 working artists (elected by artist community)
  • 1 ZAI board member

Artists hold the majority. Always.

  • Applications accepted year-round
  • Reviewed quarterly (March, June, September, December)
  • Decisions within 2 weeks of review
  • Funding distributed immediately upon approval

Priority given to: Underrepresented artists, urgent survival needs, projects that take creative risks, artists who contribute to the regional cultural ecosystem.

What Happens If You're Funded

You get the money. You use it for what you said you'd use it for. That's it.

  • Direct payment via check or transfer
  • No complicated reimbursement process
  • Minimal reporting required (just a brief follow-up on how it helped)
  • Share your work with the community if you want (not required)

We trust artists. If you say you need it, we believe you.
